Sprint racing is a competitive program for individual and team racing in Olympic style boats (kayak/canoe). Competitions known as “regattas’ allow for competitors to race against others over a wide range of categories based on age groups, gender, distances, type, and size of boats as well as team boats. Flatwater sprint racing takes place on a straight course with each boat having a designated lane. The distances raced are generally 200, 500 or 1,000 meters. For competitors, there are rules governing regattas and the governing body is the Ontario Sprint Racing Association. The Sudbury Canoe Club is a member of the Western Ontario Division of Canoe Kayak Canada.

Participants

This program is ideal for athletes aged 9 to 19 years of age in the “Train to Train,” and the “Train to Compete” stages of the Long Term Athlete Development model. This program consists of kayaking/canoe on-water sessions, strength training, circuits, running, mental skills, core strengthening and other dynamic exercises related to sprint paddling. All participants are taught the care and maintenance of the boats and are expected to follow the club protocols that are in place.

Equipment

The Sudbury Canoe Club provides all necessary equipment for the athletes. This includes boats (kayaks known as K-1, K-2, K-4 and canoes C-1, C-2, C-4), PFD’s, paddles and any safety equipment required. In addition, there are sessions in the War Canoe (15 person canoe). All boats meet Canoe Kayak Canada racing standards.

Sudbury Canoe Club’s Sprint Programs

Racing Intro Program is designed for inexperienced and experienced paddlers 10+ years old and introduces children to the sport of Olympic style paddling in sprint canoeing and kayaking. Participants will be taught fundamental canoe and kayak skills, such as balance and boat control, steering and basic technique. Primary focus in this program will be around physical literacy both on and off the water, as well as fun and safety in the athlete’s environment.

On water and off water coaching will take place 2-3x/week. Participants will be given the opportunity to compete at 1-2 optional regattas.

Racing Intermediate Program is designed for more experienced paddlers. Once an athlete can keep their balance in a racing boat, their training will develop their skills for racing in divisional and provincial competitions. Participants will build on their fundamental skills by learning about propulsion, advanced steering, and proper technique.

On and off water coaching take place 3-6x/week. Participants will be given the opportunity to compete at 2-3 divisional and provincial regattas.

The Racing Advanced Program is designed for experienced youth paddlers who wish to compete at the divisional, provincial, and national level regattas. The primary focus of this program will be both on physiological and technical development. Sport specific skills, speed endurance and strength will be some of the primary target areas of the program.

On and off water coaching and planned workouts take place from 7-10 practices per week.

The All Abilities program (previously known as Special O) is a program for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Participants paddle various water crafts such as recreational canoes and kayaks, and sprint race kayaks. All-Abilities provides a safe and inclusive environment where each participant can build skills and confidence on the water at their own pace. The focus is on having fun and being safe! The program includes a safety orientation and instruction by experienced coaches. Each paddler spends time on the water with a paddling partner for 3:1 support. This program is ideal for ages 10 and older, but younger children may be accepted at the discretion of the All-Abilities Coach.

Participants may also have the chance to race and participate in regattas, competing against other All-Abilities athletes if they wish.

Please refer to the Sprint calendar for regatta dates.
